Authorities spent two years searching for leads in the murder of a man from Florida, whose body was discovered submerged in a canal while he was on a weekend trip. In the summer of 2021, David Rainey, a 52-year-old resident of Palm Coast, was enjoying a vacation in Suwannee with his wife, Cindy Rainey, their children, and a family friend named Jeffery Sawyer.

They had rented a house for the weekend, according to a statement from the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office. On the morning of July 25, 2021, Cindy informed the authorities that her husband, whom she had been married to for 21 years, had gone missing.

She disclosed that they had engaged in an argument before he “walked away from the rental house on Saturday evening,” as per a statement released by the sheriff’s office in December 2021.

The sheriff’s office reported that David had left without his glasses, wallet, and cell phone. Following an extensive search, deputies discovered David’s body that same night in the rental house’s backyard canal.

The sheriff’s office stated that he had been brutally stabbed multiple times in the chest and dumped in the water. Subsequently, his death was officially declared a homicide. Over two years later, on October 25th, three individuals from David’s family, including his wife and two sons, were apprehended in connection with his murder.

Investigators from the Dixie County Sheriff’s Office made arrests in Bunnell, Flagler County, apprehending Cindy Rainey and her son Bailey Rainey. They also traveled to Orlando, in Orange County, to arrest another son, Jack Rainey.

All three individuals are facing charges for tampering with evidence. Police have not disclosed a potential motive for the murder of David, Cindy’s estranged husband, nor have they revealed the identity of the suspected killer.

According to David’s obituary, he was born in Redlands, Calif., and worked as a welder and mechanic specializing in steam and gas turbines.

He was highly regarded by his colleagues for his exceptional skills, work ethic, and unwavering dedication to completing tasks accurately. David’s career took him all across the United States and abroad.

According to the obituary, David was a talented athlete who loved seeing his sons excel in baseball, starting from their early T-ball days all the way through high school varsity. The obituary also mentioned that he cherished family trips to destinations such as Alaska, the White House, and New York City.

In memory of David, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated, requesting charitable donations for the future of his sons, Bailey and Jack. The campaign successfully raised $475.

Currently, Cindy Rainey and Bailey Rainey are both in custody at Flagler County jail, while Jack Rainey is held at the Orange County jail. It remains uncertain if they have sought legal representation to provide comments on their behalf.
