Alfred James Pacino was born on the 25th of April, 1940 to Rose Gerardi and Salvatore Pacino, an insurance salesman. He was born in East Harlem, New York City but moved to the Bronx after his parents divorced. His ancestry is Italian and American.

Pacino went to Herman Ridder Junior High School and also the High School of Performing Arts. While in his first school, he dropped out of most of his classes and attended the latter. His mother disagreed with his choice and he left home to pursue his acting career.

He did menial jobs like janitor, clerk, messenger, and others to finance himself in acting school. As a teenager, he was nicknamed “Sonny” and “The Actor”. His first ambition was to be a baseball player before he decided to pursue a career as an actor.

While growing up, he started smoking and drinking when he was 9 years. At age 13, he used marijuana but he never did hard drugs. Al got into fights and was known as a troublemaker in school.

The 1960s

Al Pacino’s success as an actor didn’t come easy as he had to struggle at the beginning. When he auditioned for Actors Studio, they rejected him. He didn’t let that stop him so he tried again with HB Studio and he was accepted.  He was taught acting by his now best friend Charlie Laughton. This period was rough for him as he was homeless and unemployed.

In 1962 and 1963 respectively, his mother and grandfather died consecutively. When recalling that tragedy, Pacino said: “I was 22 and the two most influential people in my life had gone, so that sent me into a tailspin.”

He got into Actors Studio when he tried four years later. The person that taught him the method of acting here was Lee Strasberg. He has described this period as the turning point of his life. Years down the line, in 2010, he became one of the presidents of the studio.

Stage

The first major acting job that gave him his first paycheck was “Awake and Sing” and also “Hurrah”. He did another stage play in 1968, “The Indians Wants the Bronx”. He won an Obie Award for his performance and also got the attention of Martin Bregman who became Pacino’s manager.

His manager was the one that helped him to launch his career and become a highly celebrated actor today. After that, he partook in many stage productions such as “Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie”, “American’s Buffalo”, and “Richard III”. He won two Tony awards for his Broadway productions.

He was nominated for Golden Globe after he appeared in “Bobby Deerfield”. His next one “And Justice for All” got him another nomination for Oscar which he didn’t win. In the 1970s, he was nominated for 4 Oscars. This was the foundation of his iconic career.

In the early 1980s, his career took a wrong turn because he appeared in a controversial movie “Cruising” which was against the gay community. After this, the “Scarface” movie turned it back on the right track. The film grossed about $45 million in the United States.

His role in “Scent of a Woman” made him win an Academy Award.
