Dangote was born in Kano, Nigeria on April 10, 1957, into the family of Mariya Sanusi Dantata and Mohammed Dangote. He is a Hausa Muslim by ethnicity, and he was from a prominent and prosperous family.

His great-grandfather, Alhaji Alhassan Dantata, was the wealthiest man in West Africa at the time of his demise in 1955. His grandfather, Sanusi Dantata, was the founder of the company Sanusi Dantata & Sons Ltd, and also the former director of Shell B.P. in Nigeria.
