X, formerly known as Twitter, has recently introduced a new feature that many users did not request. Users now have the option to engage in audio and video calls on the platform.

This development doesn’t come as a surprise, as CEO Linda Yaccarino had already confirmed the arrival of video chat on the social media site in August. It marks another step in X’s transformation into the comprehensive app that Elon Musk, the owner, envisions it to be.

Upon accessing X, some users encounter a notification declaring the presence of “Audio and Video calls.” The notification also includes instructions on how to manage call settings and decide who can initiate calls or modify other aspects of the feature’s functionality.

You can access these choices by navigating to the settings section of your Direct Messages. If you don’t want to receive calls from individuals on X, simply go to your DMs and locate the Settings menu represented by a small gear icon. Within this menu, you can deactivate the calling feature.

On the other hand, if you want to keep it enabled, you have the option to permit calls from verified users, individuals in your contacts, or exclusively those you follow.

X’s track record of creating a safe space, particularly for minority communities, is not very impressive. This lack of security is likely why many individuals prefer not to use this feature. Furthermore, not everyone will receive a notification regarding the new calling feature, as it is automatically enabled.

It would be wise to check if this feature is already available on your account and then decide whether or not to keep it.

Hopefully, the people at X will reconsider this decision, and maybe we can negotiate trading this feature for the sake of preserving Circles.

If this feature is necessary, it would have been a better choice to allow users to activate it themselves rather than having it activated by default. Some users may only become aware of this feature when an unwelcome caller decides to harass them.
