Bill Gaither was born William James Gaither on March 28, 1936, in Alexandria, Indiana, the United States to his parents named George and Lela Gaither. In 1956 when Bill was a college student he decided to form his first music group which he called the Bill Gaither Trio.
His group consisted of himself, his brother Danny Gaither, and his late sister Mary Ann. In 1959 he graduated from Anderson University with a minor in music and a major in English. After graduation, he worked briefly as an English tutor.
Bill Gaither tried for a few years to contain both his full-time teaching job and a career in music until he quit his job in 1967 and concentrated mainly on the Christian music industry. In 1964 Bill recorded He Touched Me which was his breakthrough song.
He was influenced by Southern Christian music singers like Jake Hess, Hovie Lister, The Speers, the Happy Goodmans, and the Statesmen.

Bill Gaither graduated from Anderson University with a minor in music and a major in English in 1954, after which he worked as a teacher while also doing music with his music group. In the year 1967, he quit his job and faced his music full-time.
He kicked off his quest in high school by forming the gospel-singing crew Pathfinders in high school. This was followed by the creation of another group in college which he called the Gaither Trio.

Their performances were shown on Family Channel called Homecoming, and Bill Gaither went on to make the Homecoming Concert Tour which went on the journey to perform throughout the nation.
