Who is Charley Pride?

Charley Pride is an American business owner, guitarist, singer, musician. He was formerly a professional baseball player.

His biggest musical success came in the 1970s, when he emerged the best-selling performer for RCA Records since the reign of Elvis Presley. He is one of the few African-Americans that have enjoyed considerable success in country music industry. He is also one of only three (along with Darius Rucker and DeFord Bailey) to join the Grand Ole Opry as a member. In 2000, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In 2010, he became a minority owner and special investor of the Texas Rangers, a Major League Baseball club.

Charley Pride Early Life

Charley Pride (Charley Frank Pride) was born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi, United States of America. He is one of the eleven children (eight boys and three girls) of his poor sharecropper parents. His elder brother is Mack Pride Jr. who played in the Negro League Baseball before having a role in ministry.

In 1994, Charley Pride collaborated with Jim Henderson to write an autobiography, Pride: The Charley Pride Story. Pride, in this book, revealed how he has struggled for many years with manic depression.

In 1997, Charley Pride had a tumor located at his right vocal cord removed at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Charley Pride is a fan and part owner of the baseball team Texas Rangers. He has sang the national anthem of the United States during sports events, including: before the 5th game of 2010 World Series in a game between San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers; before the 2nd game of the 2011 ALCS in a game featuring Detroit Tigers and the Rangers; prior to Super Bowl VIII.

On the 20th of January, 2014, he sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and also performed during halftime for the Memphis Grizzlies when they hosted their twelfth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Charley Pride Personal Life

Charley Pride is married to Rozene Cohran. The couple met while Rozene played baseball in the Southern states. They got married in 1956 and have been together ever since. They currently reside in Dallas, Texas.

Together, they have three children; two sons, Kraig Pride and Dion Pride, and a daughter, Angela Pride.

Charley Pride’s son, Kraig Pride, who now goes by the name Carlton Pride, is a performing artist. His band which started in 1995 in San Marcos, Texas is called Carlton Pride and Zion. Carlton and his band perform a variety of soul, funk and reggae music.

His other son, Dion Pride cowrote I Miss My Home, a song on Choices, Charley Pride’s 2010 album. Dion also played lead guitar for Charley his father, and entertained the troops on USO tours in Honduras, Island of Antigua, Panama, and Guantanamo Bay.
