On the 21st of August, 1991, Charlize’s father was killed by her mother. He was under the influence of alcohol when he started threatening them with a gun while attacking Gerda violently. Gerda retrieved her own gun and shot him first before he could do any damage to her and little Charlize. She was not charged as the death was legally called self-defense.

Charlize went to Putfontein Primary School and later withdrew from there to attend the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg. Her first language is Afrikaans and she is also fluent in English.
