What shifted his focus was the economic uncertainty caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union at the time. Because of the demands, customers were likely to pay Dmitry with different products rather than real cash. In turn, Dmitry was forced to start a new business to market these products. By 1992, he had relocated to Moscow. He was dealing with and trading securities before launching an investment company. He then instituted his own bank, and through the mid-90s he had concentrated almost completely on investments in the rising potash industry.

In late May 2014, a court ordered him to pay his former wife $4.5 billion in a divorce settlement. The settlement was later reduced to $604 million. In 2015, Dmitry and Elena finally reached a cordial settlement, although the details of this were never publicized.
