Governor aids rescue operation as 15 shops are ravaged by fire at Kwara market.

On Wednesday night, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, actively participated in a rescue mission alongside the State Fire Service to salvage goods and property at the Oja Tuntun market in Baboko, Ilorin. The market, situated in Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state, witnessed a devastating fire that engulfed 15 shops.

The fire, which ignited around 9:18 p.m., led to the loss of goods valued at an estimated N367.4 million. Oja Tuntun market, located in the heart of the ancient town, comprises 1,072 shops, 984 stands, and 27 warehouses.

In response to the emergency, the State Fire Service mobilized equipment from two major stations in Ilorin, the state capital. Their swift intervention resulted in the rescue of property estimated at about N25 billion, showcasing the effectiveness of their prompt response.

The origin of the fire remains unknown as of the time of compiling this report.

Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity for the state Fire Service, released a statement stating that on November 22, 2023, at around 21:18 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire incident at Oja Tuntun Market in Ilorin West Local Government Area.

Upon arrival, the fire crew discovered multiple shops engulfed in flames and promptly took action to control and extinguish the fire. Two fire appliances from different stations, namely Brigade Headquarters and Folawiyo Road Fire Station, collaborated effectively to address the situation.

Oja Tuntun Market, comprising 1,072 shops, 984 stands, and 27 warehouses, sustained minimal damage, with only 15 shops affected by the inferno.

The swift and efficient response of the fire service safeguarded commodities and property valued at over N25 billion. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and an investigation is currently underway.

Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq was present at the scene, expressing sympathy for those affected and commending the Kwara State Fire Service for their successful management of the situation.

Falade Olumuyiwa, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, emphasized the importance of citizens turning off electrical appliances before bedtime to prevent fire outbreaks in homes, markets, offices, and reduce the risk significantly.

Meanwhile, former Senate President Bukola Saraki extended his sympathy to the victims of the fire at the Kuntu wing of Oja Tuntun. Saraki expressed concern about the frequent occurrence of fire incidents in the city and called for urgent measures to address the situation. He commended the timely interventions of the fire service and urged comprehensive measures to prevent such avoidable incidents that adversely impact people’s livelihoods.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the marketers and the Oja Tuntun community in light of the tragic fire that occurred late Wednesday night.

“This is a matter of great concern, and I urge everyone to come together to identify lasting solutions to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future,” he expressed.

The Waziri Ngeri of Ilorin offered his prayers to God Almighty, seeking relief for the affected marketers and solace for their losses.
