According to a report by SaharaReporters, the Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that unidentified gunmen murdered and beheaded a former state legislator, the Honorable Nelson Emeka Achukwu.
This occurred one month after serving legislator Okechukwu Okoye, who represented Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s constituency in the State Assembly, was abducted and ultimately discovered decapitated.
SaharaReporters said that Okoye and his assistant were abducted on May 15, 2022, and that Okoye’s severed head was subsequently discovered in the Nnobi region.
Ikenga Tochukwu, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the recent incident to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, stating that Achukwu’s remains were discovered between the border of the Uke and Ukpor communities.
The PPRO said “the victim was abducted at about 10:15pm in his house on June 9, 2022 and efforts were being made to rescue him before this unfortunate development. His body was found between the boundary of Uke and Ukpor.
“We are still not relenting on our investigation as we will ensure that the culprits will face the full wrath of the law.”
The physically challenged former legislator was allegedly abducted from his house in Ukpor, Nnewi South LGA.
His severed corpse was eventually discovered on the bank of the Ulasi River on the evening of Tuesday, June 21, 2022, and was promptly buried by his family, since the body was already rotting.
After paying the N15 million ransom demanded by his kidnappers, a family source informed SaharaReporters that they did not think he would be killed.
The victim, the proprietor of the Nelly Oil & Gas station on Onuselogu road in Utuh, had been kidnapped and freed a few months before.
Later, Achukwu allegedly informed his family that his captors had accused him of supplying information to the military, but he was freed once it was discovered that the accusations were unfounded.
As of the publishing of this article, the motive for his second kidnapping and murder remains unclear.
