Ike Ekweremadu Celebrates 61st Birthday In UK Prison

Today is Ike Ekweremadu’s  61st birthday, but sadly he will spend this year’s birthday inside a prison in UK.

Ekweremadu was born on the 12th of May, 1962 and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has since held several top positions in government with the highest being the Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate in Nigeria.

Today would definitely have been a day for merriment and celebration in the Ekweremadu household but sadly he is currently serving a prison sentence after being convicted for organ trafficking. He was convicted alongside his wife and Dr Obinna Obetta on the 23rd of March 2023 for crimes bordering on organ harvesting.

Ekweremadu who was born at Amachara Mpu in the Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State was last week sentenced to prison in UK alongside the other two defendants.

He was charged on the 23rd of June 2022 for conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21 year old Nigerian boy from Lagos to UK for the purposes of harvesting his organs.
Prosecutors disclosed at the Old Bailey trial how the victim was ferried into the UK in 2022 to provide a Kidney for the defendant’s sick daughter in an £80,000 private transplant at the Royal Free Hospital, London.
The prosecutors further disclosed that the victim was offered up to £7,000 and a job in exchange for travelling to the UK. The maximum sentence for such crime is life imprisonment according to the prosecutors.
Ekweremadu’s daughter who is seriously sick with a Kidney problem, required a transplant for a chance at survival. She was however cleared of the same charge during the trial.
The former top lawmaker was sentenced on 5th May 2023 to nine years and eight month imprisonment. His wife was sentenced to four years and six months, while Dr Obetta got ten year prison sentence.
We wish Senator Ekweremadu a Happy Birthday and pray for some respite from his current travails.
