Ja Rule whose original name is  Jeffrey Bruce Atkins birthed on February 29, 1976.  Jeffrey’s father abandoned the family when he was just a child. He grew up as an only child because his younger sister,  named Kristen, died in the womb when she was barely five years old.

His mother, Debra, was a healthcare worker then, and due to the amount of time she spent working, Atkins was mainly raised as a Jehovah’s Witness by his grandparents.  When Atkins was 12, his mother left the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion where she served as their member.  Atkins began venturing into selling drugs in Hollis.


Atkins began his rap career in 1994 as a member of the hip-hop group Cash Money Click then, together with Chris Black and O-1. He embraced the stage name popularly known as “Ja Rule,” telling MTV News that it was inspired by a friend who addressed him as such; other friends loved to call him called him “Ja.”

They worked in collaboration on a number of songs with producer DJ Irv before releasing their debut single “Get Tha Fortune” independently in 1994. Later that year, after the group did sign with TVT Records, the song was again released as the B-side to their second single, called “4 My Click.
