He rose to stardom in the 1970s when he appeared in the TV series “Welcome Back”. He has been nominated various times for several awards and has won a few himself.

John Joseph Travolta was born on the 18th of February, 1954 to Helen Cecilia Burke, an actress, and singer, and Salvatore Travolta, a semi-professional American football player.

He was born and raised in Englewood, with his six siblings. John is the last child of his parents. He is of Italian, American, and Irish descent. He attended Dwight Morrow High school but dropped out in 1971.

John is not the only actor in the family, his other siblings Ellen, Ann, Joey, Margaret, and Sam are all actors too. They were all inspired by the mother’s love for entertainment and decided to pursue a career in it.  His parents raised him and his siblings in a catholic home but in 1975, John converted to Scientology.

The 1970s

After he dropped out of school, John relocated to New York where he joined a musical touring company “Grease” and performed on the Broadway production of “Over Here!” and he sang “Dream Drummin”. When he was done with his performance, he moved to Los Angeles.

In 1976, his single “Let Her In” was number 10 on the chart of Billboard 100. He performed several soundtracks in the film “Grease”.

The 1980s and 1990s

He played his first TV role in California in season 2 of the series “Emergency”, then he featured as a bully in the 1976 horror movie “Carrie”. After this, he and his sister, Ellen starred together in the sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter” which lasted from 1975 to 1979.

Following this, he also featured in “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”, “Saturday Night Fever ” in 1977, and “Grease” in 1978. Those films contributed hugely to his success as they were successful commercially.

The film “Saturday Night Fever” earned him his first nomination for Academy Award and he became one of the youngest performers to be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar Award. After this, he appeared in “Urban Cowboy” alongside actress Debra Winger.

However, his acting career got sidelined after this as he starred in some movies that were not really successful. The movies were “Two of a Kind” in 1983, “Perfect” in 1985, and “Staying Alive” in 1983. Then in 1989, his career took the right path again after he starred in “Look Who’s Talking” alongside Kristie Alley.

The film grossed about $297 million and he went on to feature in 3 sequels of it after that. The major turnover came in 1994 when he starred as Vincent Vega in “Pulp fiction” with which he received a nomination for an Academy Award. This was his major breakthrough as he started getting offers to feature in films playing notable roles.

Then he appeared in “Face Off” in 1997, “A Civil Action” in 1998, and “Primary Colors” also in 1998 followed by “The General Daughter” in 1999.

The 2000s

In the year 2000, Mr. Travolta starred and also co-produced the film “Battlefield Earth” but the movie was not really successful. It had lots of negative reviews. He then went ahead to feature in “Swordfish” in 2001, “Ladder 49” in 2004, “Be Cool” in 2005, “Lonely Hearts” in 2006, “Wild Hogs” in 2007, “Bolt” in 2008, “Old Dogs” and “The Taking of Pelham” in 2003.

In 2016, he was featured in the series “American Crime Story” by Robert Shapiro. Since 2010, Travolta mostly appears in action films playing thrilling roles.

Personal Issues

Their first child, Jett Travolta had a history of seizures and on the 2nd of January, 2009, he died of a seizure while they were all on a vacation in the Bahamas. In memory of his son, the actor created a foundation, Jett Travolta to help special needs children.

Although he was raised in a catholic way, he now practices Scientology.

In the month of May 2012, a lawsuit of sexual assault was filed against Travolta by two anonymous masseurs, his lawyer defending him said the allegations were “complete fiction and fabrication” and threatened that John Travolta will “sue the attorney and Plaintiff for malicious prosecution”. Several months later, the lawsuit was dropped.

The following year, his former pilot claimed they both had a relationship for six years but John denied his claims.
