John “Johnny” Mathis born John Royce Mathis on September 30, 1935, in Gilmer, Texas, United States, is an American singer and songwriter of pop music. Johnny who started his career with some singles of standard music became very famous as an album artist, with many dozen of his albums attaining gold or platinum status, with 73 reaching the Billboard charts to date. Johnny Mathis has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for three different recordings.

Johnny, although frequently regarded as a romantic singer, has a discography that includes blues, Brazilian and Spanish music, rhythm and blues, soul, Tin Pan Alley, soft rock, show tunes, country music, and also some disco songs for his 1979 album – Mathis Magic. He has also recorded 6 albums of Christmas music. His musical influences include Bing Crosby, Lena Horne, and Nat King Cole.

Early Life

Johnny Mathis is the fourth of seven children. He was born in Gilmer, Texas, United States in 1935. His parents were Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd. His ethnic origin is Native American and African American. His father on seeing his talent bought him an old piano for $25 (US$356 in 2018 dollars) and encouraged his music. Johnny Mathis started to learn songs from his father. He started to sing and dance for visitors at home, at church functions, and at school.

Johnny Mathis was a star athlete at George Washington High School in San Francisco. He was a hurdler and high jumper, and also played for the school’s basketball team. He enrolled at San Francisco State College on an athletic scholarship in 1954 with the intention to become a physical education teacher and an English teacher. While in college, he set a record of 6′-5 1/2″ for the high jump. This record is still one of the college’s top high jump heights. This record was only two inches short of the Olympic high jump record at the time.

Johnny Mathis has never completely abandoned his enthusiasm for sports, and today he is an avid golfer with nine holes in one. Johnny has hosted many self-named Golf Tournaments in the United States and the United Kingdom. 

Johnny Mathis has undergone rehabilitation for addictions to both prescription drugs and alcohol. Through the years, he has supported many Organizations including the March of Dimes, YMCA, YWCA, NAACP, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the American Cancer Society.
