Jony Ive Design and Business Career

Jony Ive With Tangerine

Jony Ive, after a year with Roberts Weaver, joined the industrials group at a London startup design agency, “Tangerine”, situated in Hoxton Square where he designed various arrays of products.

Ive designed products like microwave ovens, toilets, drills, and toothbrushes.

His frustration however with the position got to a turning point after designing a toilet, bidet, and sink for client Ideal Standard.

Unfortunately, the company’s principal rejected Jony Ive’s work, with reasons that the products were too expensive and looked too modern.

The various happenings made Ive unhappy, especially working for clients who he does not like and again having different ideas.

Between 1990 and 1992, when Robert Brunner went up the corporate ladder, he attempted to recruit Jony Ive to Apple but it failed.

At that time, Apple became a client of Tangerine, with Jony Ive spearheading the firm’s initial PowerBook designs.

Jony Ive Career at Apple

Jony Ive was officially recruited to Apple as a full-time staff in September 1992. Jony Ive was firstly apprehensive about leaving Tangerine for Apple because he thought moving from Britain to California would take a toll on his family.

Ive’s first primary assignment in Apple’s industrial design group was the second generation of the Newton and the MessagePad 110.

The first design failures and lack of commercial success during the 1990s caused Jony Ive to almost quit Apple on multiple occasions.

Steve Jobs, who left  Apple in 1985 after he was pushed away by John Sculley, and was then CEO and successor of Mike Markkula, staged a come-back to the company and recruited Jony Ive to join him in moving the firm in a different direction.

Jony Ive’s boss at that time, Jon Rubinstein, managed to retain Jony Ive as a staff by explaining that Apple was “going to make history” following the renaissance of the company in 1996.

Ive emerged as the senior vice president of industrial design in 1997 after the return of Jobs.

In the course of time, Jony Ive became head of the industrial design team responsible for the majority of the company’s significant hardware products.

His first design task in that capacity was the iMac, introduced in 1998 which he is credited with designing its translucent plastic case.

The iMac design helped pave the way for many other designs like the iPod and eventually the iPhone and the iPad.

Jony Ive’s undying desire to keep the products as thin as possible may have led to the mechanically fragile butterfly keyboard, as well the removal of the Magsafe power connector, HDMI port, and SD Card reader from the MacBook.

Jony Ive was given his own design office at Apple at the beginning part of  2000.

He oversaw the project of his appointed design team and was the only Apple designer with a private office.

Only Jony Ive’s core team, consisting of about 15 people from the UK, the US, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, and top Apple executives were given access to the office.

The office contained all of the concepts, which included prototypes, that the design team was working on.

Jony Ive also didn’t grant his children and family members access to the office.

At the beginning part of 2010, Jobs declared that Jony Ive has more operational power than anyone else at Apple except him.

The offices of Jobs and Jony Ive in Apple’s Cupertino headquarters were linked via a hidden, built-in corridor with single-access doors.

There was a report in 2011, that Jony Ive received $30 million in base salary with a $25 million stock bonus in total compensation for the year.

Jony Ive’s compensation ceased to be publicly revealed by the firm thereafter, which rendered him the only Apple executive to be afforded such as provision.

Apple in October 2012, announced that Jony Ive would provide leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) throughout the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design.

Following the 2013 World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) announcement of iOS 7 and Jony Ive’s role as principal, Apple press information was as well updated to reflect Ive’s new title.

That same year, in a press update, Jony Ive said he hoped his best work was yet to come and that he preferred to be identified as a maker of products, rather than a designer.

In May 2015, the firm announced Jony Ive’s promotion to chief design officer (CDO).

At that time, one of only three C-level executives at Apple along with CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri, Jeff Williams was promoted to COO at the end of 2015.

In December 2017, Apple announced that Jony Ive would resume direct responsibility for the company’s product design after spending a preceding couple of years in a more executive, non-creative role.

After Jony Ive left Apple in June 2019, he kept working with Apple, and he designed notably some watchOS 7 watch faces in his studio.

It was also confirmed by Apple that Jony Ive worked on the M1 iMac (2021) but however didn’t give additional information about Ive’s role in the development of the model.

The Announcement was unsurprising news having it that the color palette of the iMac, is a throwback to the G3 iMac (1998), which Jony Ive designed as well.

Jony Ive With LoveFrom

In June 2019, Apple announced that Jony Ive would leave the company. They further stated that Ive would begin an independent firm named LoveFrom, along with fellow Apple industrial designer Marc Newson to work with Apple as its major client.

The firm, LoveFrom is known to maintain a low profile and does not reveal information about its staff.
