Joseph Yobo biography is about a very talented footballer from Nigeria. He was born on the 6th of September, 1980 in Kono Community, Khana local government area, Rivers State, Nigeria. He is a solid center back defender and has played for different great football clubs in the world. As a patriot, he has represented his country Nigeria in several matches and, was the team captain until his retirement in June 2014. Apart from being an international professional footballer, he is also an entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist.


Joseph Yobo started playing football at a very young age in Rivers State. He was so talented as a very young boy, and he improved his game and began playing professional football in 1996 and was signed by Michelin-Port Harcourt, that same year. He played for Michelin 1996-1997.

In the year 1998, Joseph Yobo traveled to Belgium to play for Standard Liège football club. Although, he made his first debut in 2000 for the Belgium club side and made forty-six (46) appearances for them. In the year 2001, Marseille football club of France signed him.

After Marseille football club of France signed Joseph Yobo, not too long he was loaned to Tenerife in Spain. He played for Tenerife for about nine months and then went back to Marseille. After a short period, he was loaned again to Everton in England, July 2002. He was the first signing of David Moyes. A rapid move was made to permanently keep Joseph Yobo in Everton, and they succeeded in 2003 after Joseph Yobo settled his issues he was having with Marseille. Everton added a fixed extra 4 million euros to what he was paid before. His presence was so relevant that he was made the captain of Everton in a very short while,(holding a record as the first African to captain an English team).

He was one of the very consistent players in Everton that in the 2006-2007 season, he was among the seven players in the whole of English premier league that always played every minute of every match.

In 2006, the delay in Joseph Yobo signing a new contract led to rumors of him moving to Arsenal football club. Though on the 22nd July 2006, he renewed his contract with Everton until 2010. On the 15 of April 2007, he became the record appearance holder of a foreign player in Everton, which he held till 2012.

On the 25th of October,2007 in a UEFA Cup match of Larissa of  Greece versus Everton, Everton’s main captain Phil Neville was not around and Joseph Yobo was named the captain of the team, and he became the first African to captain Everton football club. Even as a central full back defender, Joseph Yobo scored goals for Everton. On the 6th of May,2009 he scored his first goal of the 2009-2010 season against West Ham United to cement their 3-1 victory. On the 29th November 2009,he scored an own goal during their match against Liverpool, which Everton lost 2-0. After that, he started being a regular to the bench.


On the 31st August 2010, Joseph Yobo left on a one-year contract loan to Fenerbahçe football club in Turkey. He scored a goal that season and his support were vital in the team as they won the Turkish league that season. The contract deal was renewed on the 6th of September 2011, with 700,000 pounds and he was signed for another one year loan for 2.35 million pounds. The on the 4th of August,2012 Joseph Yobo signed a new permanent three-year contract with Fenerbahçe. Fenerbahçe terminated his contract at the end of the 2014-2015 season, with an agreement. The management of Fenerbahçe football club awarded him with appreciation and released him.

Norwich City

On the 30th of January,2014, Joseph Yobo traveled back to England on loan to play for Norwich City, for the rest of that season. His first match ended goalless against a very high-scoring Manchester City club side.

International Career

Joseph Yobo was a former Nigeria International and has featured in three different FIFA World Cups and also three different African Nations Cup tournaments. He capped Nigerian Super Eagles over 100 times.

As a youth, he participated in the 1999 FIFA World Youth Champions, where Nigeria was knocked out at the quarterfinals.

He made his first appearance in the Nigeria Super Eagles National team on the 24th of March,2001, in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Zambia. Joseph Yobo also partook in all the matches Nigeria played in the Africa Cup of Nations 2002. He was also part of the Nigeria Super Eagles National Team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa. Yobo was also part of the Nigeria Super Eagles Team that won the 2013 Africa Nations Cup.

In 2014, Joseph Yobo was part of the Stephen Keshi’s team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. On the 30th of June, Joseph Yobo made his 100th International appearance for the Super Eagles National Team against France and he was the captain of the team, he scored an own goal and France defeated Nigeria 2-0. He announced his retirement after that match.


In 2007, Joseph Yobo started a foundation known as Joseph Yobo Charity Foundation to assist the less privileged kids in Nigeria. By 18 July 2007, he has awarded over 300 kids with scholarships that ranged from primary to university level.

He runs a football camp in Lagos, and he also established a football academy in his homeland Ogoni in Rivers State.


Club: Joseph Yobo was among the Fenerbahçe squad that won the Turkish Super league in 2010-2011 seasons. He was also among the Fenerbahçe squad that won the Turkish Cup back to back in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

International: Joseph Yobo was among a squad of the Super Eagles of Nigeria National Team, that won the African Cup of Nations in 2013.


In December 2009, Joseph Yobo met former “Most beautiful girl in Nigeria,” Adaeze Igwe, and after a short courtship, he got married to her in a midnight low profile wedding that was held in Jos, Plateau, Nigeria. Their first son is Joey Yobo.

Joseph Yobo has an elder brother, Albert Yobo; he was also once a Nigerian International footballer.

On the 27th of May,2016, the Government of Rivers State organized a testimonial match in honor of Joseph Yobo as he retired from active football.

On the 28th of May,2016, King GNK Gininwa of Ogoni kingdom conferred chieftaincy titles of Mene Aborlo 1 and Waamene Aborlo 1 on Joseph Yobo and his wife respectively.


Joseph Yobo drives a wide array of exquisite cars. He owns a Ferrari 458 spider ( about $320, 000) as well as other very luxurious cars which include Audi Q7, Continental GT, Porsche Panamera, Mercedez Benz ML AMG, Range Rover Sport, Mercedez Benz g63 Wagon, and S Turbo.

Joseph Yobo also owns a vast expanse of Apartments and condos in the US, Turkey and many locations in Nigeria ( Lekki, VGC and Abuja). He also owns a nightclub called Extreme Reloaded in London.
