Joyce Meyer’s Early Life

Joyce Meyer was born Pauline Joyce Hutchison on June 4 1943 in south St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Her father joined the military and fought in the second world war after she was born. In interviews she gave, she revealed that upon his return from the war he started abusing her sexually.

She attended O’Fallon Technical High School in Saint Louis and married a part-time car salesman soon after her senior high school year. Their marriage lasted only five years. She maintains that her husband continually cheated on her and made her steal checks from her employer.

They used the stolen money to go on a vacation. She says that she returned the money after some years. After her divorce, Joyce frequented local bars before she met Dave Meyer, an engineering draftsman, and they got married on January 7, 1967.

Joyce Meyer is a Christian minister. It was during her prayer session one morning in the year 1976 as she drove to work that she heard God calling her name. Although she was born again at the age of nine, her unhappiness made her go deeper into her faith. As she returned home later on the day, she felt “drunk with God’s spirit” and “full of liquid love”.

Joyce Meyer was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church for a while. She began leading an early morning Bible study class at a local cafe and later became active in a charismatic church in Fenton called Life Christian Center. She became the church’s associate pastor after a few years and grew popular for her work.

The church became one of the top charismatic churches in the area, mostly because of her fame as a Bible teacher. She also began airing a 15-minute radio broadcast every day on a St. Louis radio station.
