Kathrin Romary Beckinsale is an English actress born on the 26th of July, 1973. Kathrin made her film debut in the 1993 film – Much Ado About Nothing. As at the time, she was still a student at the University of Oxford.

Beckinsale has starred in various British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland (1994), Cold Comfort Farm (1995), Emma (1996), and The Golden Bowl (2000).

She has also appeared in various stage and radio productions. In the late 1990s, Beckinsale started to seek film work in the United States.

After her appearances in the small scale dramas such as The Last Days of Disco (1998) and Brokedown Palace (1999), she got starring roles in the war drama Pearl Harbor (2001), the romantic comedy –Serendipity, and Tiptoes (2003).

Following these, she also appeared in The Aviator (2004) and Click (2006). Currently, Beckinsale is 46 years old.

Beckinsale was cast as Selene in the film series Underworld (2003 – 2016). She has thus attained recognition basically for her performance in other action movies, such as Van Helsing (2004), Whiteout (2009), Contraband (2012), and Total Recall (2012).

Kate did not stop to appear in smaller dramatic projects also, such as Snow Angels (2007), Nothing but the Truth (2008), and Everybody’s Fine (2009). Beckinsale received critical acclaim, in 2016, for her performance in the period comedy film Love and Friendship.

She was born in Chiswick, Borough of Hounslow, London, England. Kate has no siblings as she is the only child of her parents. Her parents are actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe.

However, although she has no full sibling, Kate has an older paternal half-sister, Samantha Beckinsale, who is also an actress. Both sisters are not in regular communication.

At the age of four, Beckinsale made her first television appearance in an episode of This is Your Life, which was dedicated to her father.

Beckinsale’s father died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 31 years old when Kate was five years old. Beckinsale “started expecting bad things to happen”, as she was greatly overwhelmed by the news of the loss of her father.

When Beckinsale was nine, her mother moved in with director Roy Battersby, and Kate was raised alongside Battersby’s four sons and daughter.

Battersby and Kate have a close relationship. Battersby was a member of the Workers Revolutionary Party during Kate’s youth. Their family friends included Ken Loach and Vanessa Redgrave.

For her education, Beckinsale attended Godolphin and Latymer Schools. It was an independent school for girls in Hammersmith, West London and it was involved with the Orange Tree Youth Theater.

Beckinsale exhibited notable wit as she was a two-time winner of the WH Smith Young Writers Award for both fiction and poetry.

Beckinsale has described herself as “a late bloomer”. She said: “All of my friends were kissing boys and drinking cider way before me.

Beckinsale studied French and Russian literature at New College, Oxford. Beckinsale was involved with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

Kate spent her third year studying in Paris since it was required of her as a Modern Languages student. However, she decided to quit her university education in order to focus on her burgeoning acting career. She said: “It was getting to the point where I wasn’t enjoying either thing enough because both were very high pressure”.

Shortly after leaving Oxford University in 1995, Beckinsale appeared in Cold Comfort Farm, where she played the role of Flora Poste, a newly orphaned 1930s socialite sent to live with distant family members in rural England.

The film was an adaptation of Stella Gibbons’s novel and also featured Joanna Lumley, Eileen Atkins, Ian McKellen, Rufus Sewell, and Stephen Fry.

In 2001, Beckinsale rose to fame with a leading role in the war film Pearl Harbor. She starred as a nurse torn between two pilots. Beckinsale also became known as an action star after playing a vampire in 2003’s Underworld film series.

Kate dated Edmund Moriarty from 1992 to 1993. Thereafter, Michael Sheen – a Welsh actor, had a pretty long dating relationship with Beckinsale.

They were together from 1995 to 2003. They met for the first time when they were cast in the touring production of The Seagull in early 1995.

Beckinsale revealed later that she had love at first sight. During this time, she also gave birth to their first child, a daughter named, Lily Mo Sheen (b. January 31, 1999) in London.

During this 8-year period, Michael never proposed to her. However, Kate ended her relationship with Michael Sheen after she fell in love with filmmaker Len Wiseman.
