Matt Groening’s Early Life

Matthew Abraham Groening was born in Portland, Oregon, United States on 15 February 1954, to Margaret Ruth, a teacher, and Homer Philip Groening, a filmmaker, writer, and advertiser. When he was in college, he was the editor of the college paper “The Cooper Point Journal”.

He drew cartoon illustrations and wrote articles for the journal. He stated that he got the inspiration to draw cartoons after watching an animated movie titled One Hundred and One Dalmatians. He has cited his rope model as cartoonist Charles Monroe Schulz, who was famous for his comic creation Peanuts.

Matt Groening was raised in Portland where he attended both Ainsworth Elementary School and Lincoln High School. In 1972, he was enrolled at Evergreen State College where he studied for five years.

Matt Groening’s career kick-started in 1977 when he began doing some odd jobs in Los Angeles. At this time he started to draw cartoons for “Life in Hell”, his self-published book which was based on his struggles. The very next year he sold his first comic to magazine “Wet”.

That same year, he gained employment at a newspaper in Los Angeles. Later on he was able to publish Life in Hell officially as his first comic strip.
His comic became a big success, with more than 20,000 copies sold in its two printings. This success motivated him to begin his next project titled “Work in Hell”, which Deborah Caplan also published.

Upon seeing his success, James L Brooks disclosed his interest to involve Matt Groening in creating an animated series to run on comedy series The Tracy Ullman Show. Matt Groening then created One of his greatest works ever, The Simpsons which aired on The Tracy Ullman Show for the first time in 1987. The Simpsons became enormously popular and earned an exclusive half-hour spin-off series.

In 1989, The Simpsons premiered and quickly grew to become the longest-running United States primetime TV Series. In the year 1994, Matt Groening began his next project by launching Bingo Comics, his comic book company which released several television series under its name, such as Futurama and The Simpsons.

Asides from creating cartoons, Matt Groening has appeared in documentaries and movies including Comic Book: The Movie,  The Seventh Python, I know That Voice, and The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

In 2012, a 3-D short film which was based on The Simpsons was released, and Matt Groening was the writer and executive producer of this project.

Matt Groening got married to Deborah Caplan in 1986, and together they had two sons, Abe and Homer. The couple, however, separated in 1999 after being together for thirteen years.

In 2011, Matt Groening married artist Augustina Picasso after being in a relationship with her for four years. This marriage made him the stepfather to Camille, Augustina Picasso’s daughter. In 2013, Matt Groening and Augustina Picasso welcomed a son named Nathaniel Philip Picasso.

The family lives happily together, and nothing indicates that the cartoonist is having any marital problems, for now at least.
