Every woman’s August visitor comes with many unwanted physical and emotional attributes. Most times, we do not feel like getting out or doing something fun. It is quite easy to let go of most activities you should get done especially since you feel so “off” and out of sync with the rest of the World. This time of the month can be quite a burden but with the right information you can still have a swell time with yourself. One great reason why is that it is not healthy to curl up and wallow in depression. Here are five things you should do when on your menstrual period which will help lighten up on all that discomfort you feel and enjoy yourself.

1. Exercise

Contrary to popular notion, Exercise should be a plus during your menstrual period, but it must be done right or else it could cause more damage. A study on professional female athletes has observed that at such time in the month, it is much easier for them to have a lot of injuries. Since feelings of weakness and stress are more amplified in this time of the month, you should ease off on Aerobic sports and instead focus on Sporting activities that ease off all that strain on the lower part of your body. Exercises like, Walking, Yoga and Pilates should be incorporated. You can even try dancing to your favourite music, this is quite an exercise and can help you feel really good as well as easing off all that discomfort.

  1. Avoid certain Food products

There’s a whole list of food substances you should avoid, this might be quite a chore but it is very important if you want to look forward to more improvements and healthy egg development. Salty food substances and dairy products should be avoided like plague during your menstrual period as they may only aggravate discomfort. If you also want to have a healthy Uterus; you should consider this as a priority on your list of do’s and don’ts.

  1. Increase Body Warmth

This may be the most obvious as it has been proven to help with cramping and general upliftment of your spirit. You can use a hot water bottle or heat pack and place around your tummy area. This increases flow and helps your muscles relax while preventing painful cramping. It can be quite a lifesaver especially if you are one for painful cramping. To increase warmth further, you can also take a nice cup of green tea or raspberry tea. These are perfect for such time in the month and have been known to be quite good for Woman health for centuries on end.

  1. Change protection more regularly than occasionally

Contrary to the ads placed upon tampon and pads that say you should use for 8 hours straight, it is important you change them every 3 to 4 hours. For most of us who have heavy flow, this can be quite natural, for others, almost impossible. Changing your tampons after 8 hours is heavily discouraged and should never be done- whether you flow heavily or lightly. Wearing them for so long increases discomfort and breeds the formation of bacteria and ultimately infectious diseases. Our body as Women are most sensitive and vulnerable during the menstrual period, you should take care of it properly.

  1. Increase Intake of Certain food Substances

Magnesium and Vitamin B complex is every essential nutrient for Women as they are great for fertility and productivity of the reproductive system.  Increase intake of Magnesium and Vitamin B complex containing food substances. Food substances that contain Magnesium include:

  • Cashew nuts and other nuts
  • Black beans
  • Quinoa
  • Avocado
  • Dark chocolate
  • Fish
  • Bananas
  • Leafy greens

Magnesium also helps the muscles relax, and therefore decrease cramps. It is also quite great for migraines and headaches, and reduces fluid retention and bloating.

Vitamin B complex can be found in food substances such as:

  • Fish
  • Soy
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Beans

Vitamin B6 has been proven to be good for heavy periods and fluid retention; Vitamin B12 has been found to be quite effective in improving fertility. Therefore invest wisely in your body by adding this to your daily intake especially within menstrual period, you can also take magnesium and Vitamin B supplements but do consult your doctor before use.
