Career

Brzezinski began her journalism career in 1990 as an assistant on ABC’s World News This Morning.   She moved up the ranks, from assignment and features editor to general assignments reporter. She joined CBS affiliate WFSB-TV/WFSB-DT in Hartford in 1992 and quickly rose through the ranks to become the station’s weekday morning anchor in 1995.

She left that position in 1997 to join CBS News, where she worked as a correspondent and anchor for the overnight news program Up to the Minute. Brzezinski left CBS News in 2001 to work for rival MSNBC on the weekday afternoon show HomePage, alongside co-anchors Gina Gaston and Ashleigh Banfield.

In September 2001, she returned to CBS News as a desk correspondent, thrusting her into the spotlight as the primary “Ground Zero” reporter for the September 11, 2001, attacks

During this time, she appeared on CBS Sunday Morning and 60 Minutes on occasion. CBS fired her shortly after.

MSNBC

In  2007, Brzezinski returned to MSNBC to host the evening “Up to the Minute” newscast. During the week, she started working as primetime newsbreaks. She also appeared on NBC Nightly News and Weekend Today as a guest anchor on occasion.

When I actually realized that reading the prompt for lead-ins and breaks was my primary function.  The producers gradually urged my participation in news reader segments with which I was more comfortable.

Campaign against trivial journalism

Brzezinski refused to read a report about Paris Hilton’s release from jail on June 26, 2007, near the beginning of Morning Joe. One hour later, during another news break segment, her producer Andy Jones tried to push the story as the lead, ranking it higher than Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar’s dispute with President Bush over the Iraq War, which Brzezinski thought was more essential.

Following several sarcastic comments, she attempted to set fire to the story’s script on the air but was physically stopped.

She then tore up the script and got up one hour later to run another copy of it through a paper shredder borrowed from Dan Abrams’ office.   The incident quickly went viral across the Internet, and Brzezinski did receive a flood of fan mail in support of her on-air protest.

In  2010, she refused to report on Lindsay Lohan and Levi Johnston after being pressed on the air. Geist and Pat Buchanan eventually reported the stories with the caption, “News You Can’t Use,” which became popular.

Democratic National Committee email leak

According to the 2016 Democratic National Committee email leak, the DNC chairperson emailed Chuck Todd, Political Director of NBC News and host of Meet the Press, to demand that he help stop Brzezinski from condemning the DNC’s treatment of Bernie Sanders.   In December 2016, as Clinton had lost, Brzezinski suggested that Clinton’s campaign tried to silence her by calling out executives at NBC.

On February 15, 2017, Brzezinski barred Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway from appearing on her show in the future.

I’m not going to do it. Because I don’t believe in fake news or false information… every time I’ve seen her on television, something is off, off, or incorrect “.

Her co-host Joe Scarborough said the decision to exclude Conway from future appearances was based on her being “out of the loop” and “in neither of the key meetings”. “She hasn’t been briefed. She’s just saying things to get in front of the camera and prove her worth “.

Conflict with Donald Trump

While hosting Morning Joe in 2020, Brzezinski blasted Trump for tweeting a conspiracy theory that her husband was responsible for the death of Lori Klausutis.

Trump did refer to Klausutis’ death as a “cold case” in his tweet. In July 2001, Klausutis was brutally murdered at her desk. An autopsy revealed that she died as a result of an undiagnosed heart problem, which caused her to lose consciousness and hit her head when she fell.

You’re a sick person, putting this family through this, putting her husband through this, just to get back at Joe because Joe got you again today.

Because he speaks the truth, and he speaks clearly about your lack of concern and empathy for others, as well as your inability to cope with this massive human catastrophe (COVID-19), the fact that you have made it worse, and that you continue to make it worse every day. And you’re not even going to wear a mask to protect people from your germs”.

On May 26, 2020, The New York Times published an op-ed in which Lori Klausutis’s husband, Timothy Klausutis, demanded Trump stop abusing his late wife and urged Twitter to remove the tweets.

Klausutis wrote to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, pleading with him to intervene, alleging that Trump has violated Twitter’s terms of service and “taken something that does not belong to him.

Later that day, Trump appeared to address the letter in two tweets, tweeting “The opening of a Cold Case against Psycho.” This was not a new idea for Donald Trump saying that it had been going on for years now, even before I joined the chorus.

Controversies

Brzezinski made complaints on her show in 2017 that women who had accused her friend and former colleague Mark Halperin of sexual misconduct refused to meet with him so he could apologize.
