Huckabee ran for the Republican nomination for president again in 2016 but backed down early in the primary.

Early Life

Mike Huckabee is a 67-year-old Minister and political commentator, born on August 24, 1955, in Hope, Arkansas, United States.

The son of conservative Southern Democrats Dorsey Wiles Huckabee from 1923-1996 and Mae (Elder) Huckabee (1925-1999). Huckabee is of English, German, and Scots-Irish ancestry, with origins in America dating back to the Colonial Era.

He has attributed his political views to his working-class upbringing; his dad worked as a fireman and mechanic, and his mother as a clerk at a gas company.

His first job, at the age of 14, was reading the news and climate on a radio station. In 1972, his chapter of the American Legion-sponsored Boys State program elected him as the governor of Arkansas.

He was vice president of the Hope High School Student Council from 1971 to 1972. He was president of the Hope High School Student Council during the 1972-1973 school year. Pat Harris, his only sister, is a teacher in middle school. He was consecrated at Garrett Memorial Baptist Church in Hope in 1972.

He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University on May 8, 1978, having completed his bachelor’s degree in faith before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. After a year, he dropped out of divinity school to work in Christian broadcasting.

Pastoral Career

At the age of 21, Huckabee started working for televangelist James Robison. Robison stated that his beliefs had so much shaped his personal life( personality), and his attitude shapes his policies. Moral absolutes have shaped his entire life.” Before joining politics, he pastored Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, from 1980 to 1986.

Huckabee set up 24-hour television stations in Pine Bluff and Texarkana, where he created documentaries and hosted the Positive Alternatives program. In the mid-1980s, he urged the all-white Immanuel Baptist Church to embrace black members. Years later, he wrote about his life experience as a minister.

In 1989, Huckabee did run for the Arkansas Baptist State Convention presidency against Ronnie Floyd of Springdale where he was elected president and served from 1989 to 1991. Huckabee has these honorary degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters from John Brown University in 1991 and a Doctor of Laws from the Ouachita Baptist University in 1992.

Political Career

In his first political campaign, Huckabee confronted incumbent Democratic senator Dale Bumpers and earned 40% of the vote in the general election. Arkansas governor Bill Clinton was elected president during the same election, making lieutenant governor Jim Guy Tucker the new mayor when Clinton resigned.

In 1993, Republican state chairman Asa Hutchinson urged Huckabee to run in the July 27 special election for lieutenant governor. Acknowledging that his defeat came from key conservative Democrats, Huckabee ran a staunchly conservative campaign. In the later general election, he conquered Nate Coulter, who had held positions as Bumpers’ campaign manager.

In his autobiography From Hope to Higher Ground, Huckabee described the chilly reception he earned from the Arkansas Democratic establishment briefly after his election as lieutenant governor: “Even before our arrival, the doors to my office were nailed shut from within, workspace furniture and equipment were taken down, and the budget was spent down to virtually nothing.

After 59 days of widespread outrage, the doors were finally opened for me to take up the actual office I had been elected to two months before.”

“So we decided to begin the campaign with ads that depicted Mike as a moderate whose ethics were related to those of other Arkansans,” Morris did explain.

As a result of his previous support for the Council of Conservative Citizens, Huckabee decided to withdraw from a speaking session before their national convention in April 1994, following an adverse media campaign against the Cofcc.

He echoed the charges leveled by various forms of media and civil rights organizations, as well as the Southern Poverty Law Center, recalled his prior association with the Cofcc, and said, “I will not take part in any program that has to do with racist overtones. I’ve spent my whole life-fighting racism and anti-Semitism.

” Huckabee was re-elected to a full term as lieutenant governor in 1994, defeating Democratic candidate Charlie Cole Chaffin with nearly 59 percent of the vote. Huckabee agreed to $71,500 in speaking fees and travel expenses from Action America while serving as lieutenant governor. The group’s largest contributor was R. J. Reynolds.

David Pryor declared his resignation from the United States Senate in October 1995. Huckabee then announced his candidacy for the open seat and surged ahead in the polls, but he was pressured to quit the race to lead the state after incumbent Governor Jim Guy Tucker stepped down following his fraud and conspiracy convictions.

During his campaign, Huckabee objected to the then-governor Tucker’s strategy for a constitutional convention in December.

In a special election, voters opposed the plan by an 80-20 margin. In January 1996, Huckabee started campaigning against a highway referendum aired on television ads paid for by the Republican National Committee and the Arkansas Republican Party.

Tucker voted in favor of the referendum, which included increased taxes and a bond program to improve 1,300 miles (2,100 kilometers) of the highway.

The bond question, which included a sales tax increase and a gas tax increase, was conquered by a vote of 87-13 percent. A second question, a five-cent growth in diesel tax, was conquered by a margin of 86-14 percent. Huckabee also opposed Tucker’s school consolidation plan.
