Okonjo- Iweala urges South-East governors to focus on developing the regional economy.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Centre and former Nigerian Minister of the Economy, recently urged the governors of the South-East region to take intentional steps towards building a strong regional economy.

Speaking at the Southeast summit on the region’s economy and security in Owerri, Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the need for the governors to adopt deliberate strategies that will enhance economic growth.

Her keynote address, delivered via a Zoom meeting, emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among the governors in order to fully utilize the abundant human resources of the Igbo race and drive economic advancement in the region.

β€œThe Igbo possess a significant number of talented individuals. With our presence spread across the world, we have been able to achieve great success. I implore the Southeast governors to come together and organize an investment forum that will examine the obstacles hindering progress in the region and find ways to overcome them. It is crucial for them to set aside disagreements and collaborate.

Additionally, I encourage the governors to initiate discussions with pharmaceutical companies and vaccine producers in order to establish a market chain within the zone. This is certainly possible now that the power sector has been privatized.

Furthermore, I appeal to the governors to fully utilize the immense human resources of the Igbo people, thereby helping professors in the development of high-quality schools and allowing diaspora doctors to construct top-notch hospitals.” She concluded.

The rising insecurity in the region was condemned by Anyim Pius Anyim, the chairman of the occasion and Nigeria’s former senate President. Anyim urged the leaders of the region to take a strong stance on the struggle for the actualization of a sovereign state of Biafra, while also suggesting that the agitators should be engaged in dialogue.

Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, called for the restoration of Igbo values in order to drive economic goals.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State welcomed his fellow governors to the state and expressed his commitment to the growth of the region.

Governors Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Alex Otti of Abia State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State all declared their readiness to work towards the unity and safety of the region.

The summit will continue with technical sessions on Friday.
