Esther Onyenezide, the Nigerian midfielder, is overjoyed after receiving an invitation to join Nigeria’s Super Falcons squad for the upcoming Women’s Olympic qualifying games against Ethiopia.

According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum extended the invitation to the 20-year-old following an injury to Halimatu Ayinde, a star player in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Onyenezide showcased her skills and impressed during last year’s U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Costa Rica, where she scored three goals and helped Nigeria advance to the quarter-finals.

Upon learning of her call-up, the Rivers Angels player expressed her excitement and is eagerly anticipating her debut.

“I am thrilled to announce that I have received an invitation to join Nigeria’s senior women’s national team. It is a great honor for me to represent my country and wear the green and white jersey. I cannot wait to give my best and make Nigeria proud in our match against Ethiopia,” she stated on her X account.

The first game of the two-part series will take place today at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in Addis Ababa, while the second leg will be held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on October 31st.

The delegation, consisting of players from Nigeria and the technical and support staff, arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday. The overseas-based players were already in the training camp.

The team that achieves the highest aggregate score will face the winners of the match between Cameroon and Uganda.

Ethiopia’s senior girls, also known as Lucy, earned a place in this round by defeating Chad 10-0 in the initial series held in July. Lucy dominated the first match with a 6-0 victory in Addis Ababa and continued their impressive performance with a 4-0 win in N’Djamena five days later.
