Born on October 23, 1940 in Três Corações, Brazil; Edison Arantes do Nascimento popularly known as  Pelé is a former professional footballer for Brazil  national team and Santos football club. Winner of three world cups, Pele was voted as the player of the century by FIFA for his incredible achievements.

Born to Joao Ramos and Dona Celeste, Pele’s family moved when he was a child, to the city of Bauru in Sao Paolo where he grew up in poverty and played football on the streets. He could not afford a proper football and usually played with sock stuffed with paper. He later played for several amateur teams when he was an adolescent.


In 1956, a then 15 year old Pele moved to the city of Santos with his then manager de Brito to try out for professional club Santos FC, where he impressed the then Santos coach Lula during his trial and signed a professional contract with them in June 1956. He made his senior debut at the age of 15 where he scored his first goal. During the 1957 season, he was given a starting place in the Brazil first team and at the age of 16 became the highest scorer in the league.

He shot to prominence in the 1958 world cup where he was the youngest player at the tournament and the youngest to play in the world cup final. Displaying remarkable speed, athleticism and field vision, the 17-year-old erupted to score three goals in a 5-2 semifinal win over France. He also scored two goals in the historic final as Brazil lifted the trophy and that shot Pele into super stardom. He would go on to win two more world cup trophies in 1962 and 1970 with Brazil.

There were several interests from top European club sides after the 1962 World Cup. However he could not consider any of the offers as the then President of Brazil, Janio Quadros, had declared Pele an “Official National Treasure” the previous year, in a move targeted at preventing him from leaving the country for Europe.

Pelé announced that he was retiring from football in 1974, but he was convinced to come out of retirement the following year to play for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League, his presence boosted the popularity of the league momentarily.

His final game was an exhibition game between New York Cosmos and Santos in October 1977, where he played for both teams.

Pele retired from football with a total haul of 1,281 goals in 1,383 games. This figure however includes unofficial matches and tours with Santos and The New York Cosmos.


Pele married 3 times and has several children from different women. He married Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi on 21 February 1966. They had three children, two daughters and a boy. They would later divorce in 1982. In April 1994, Pele married singer Assiria Lemos Seixas who gave birth to twins in 1996, they got divorced in 2008.

Pele remarried at the age of 76 in July 2016 to Marcia Aoki who he had been dating from 2010. Pele also had at least two other children out of wedlock from relationships with some of his other girlfriends.
