Phil Mickelson’s Career

Upon completing his studies at Arizona State University, Phil became a professional golf player. He won the “Amateur Title” in 1990 as the first left-handed person in the world.

His amazing career has seen him play and win multiple PGA Tour tournaments. In the year 2000, he won Buick International, breaking Tiger Woods’ winning streak.

He won his first major championship in the year 2004, but before this, many fans and pundits already rated him as a great golfer who had the potential and characteristics of winning championships.

His second major career win happened in 2005 when he won the PGA Championship that took place in Baltusrol.

He bagged his 3rd consecutive win in the Masters tournament in 2006 and this victory installed him at second position in the Official World Golf Ranking, and put him before other great golfers like Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh.

In 2007, he emerged the winner of the Deutsche Bank Championship after a tough campaign. He was paired with Tiger Woods who he ended up defeating for the second time in his career. He is among the only five golf players alive that has shot 59 in a single competition.

The other four are Al Geiberger, David Duval, Annika Sörenstam, and Chip Beck. He has been a runner-up in the major league for a record 11 times, a close second to golfer Jack Nicklaus who has done so 19 different times.

Awards & Achievements

Phil Mickelson has scored eight amateur wins in his playing career. Besides this, he has won the 1996 ‘Golf Digest Byron Nelson Award’, two 2004 ‘ESPY’ awards, one ‘World Golf’ championship, nine ‘European Tour’ wins, five ‘Major’ championships, three ‘Tour Champ’/‘FedEx Cup’ events, one ‘Players’ championship, and 32 other ‘PGA’ titles. He has been inducted into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.

Personal Life, Family, Health Issues

Phil is married to Amy McBride, with whom he has three children. When his wife got diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, Phil suspended his ‘PGA Tour’ schedule indefinitely in order to be close to her.

After he was assured by the doctors that her situation could be managed, Phil returned back to playing, only to leave again for his mother’s breast cancer treatment. He has always put his family first before anything else including his career.

In 2010, he got diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis for which he underwent medical treatment, and to help battle this disease, he also became a vegetarian. He still continued his golf career even after going through two hernia surgeries in 2016.

Mickelson, now 50, is known to be a very compassionate man. On hearing the story of a golfer that had retired and his struggle to fend for himself and his family, he volunteered to sponsor one of his daughters through school.

He has contributed a big part of his earnings to philanthropic causes. The proud dad of three who has a height of 191cm and weighs 91kg became conscious of his weight.

Phil was matched with younger players and began training sessions under Sean Cochran in a deliberate effort to lose twenty pounds, determined to stay fit enough for competitive golf.

He has been investigated for insider trading in ‘Dean Foods’ and ‘Clorox’ stocks, but so far, nothing implicating has been proved against him.
