A 14-year-old domestic helper named Joy Afekafe has been arrested by the Niger State Police Command as the main suspect in the murder case of Dr. Funmilola Sherifat Adefolalu, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology Minna.

Dr. Adefolalu was found dead in her residence in Minna, Niger State, as reported by SaharaReporters. The body of the lecturer, who taught in the Department of Biochemistry at the School of Life Sciences, was discovered in a pool of blood.

Members of her church had gone to her home to check on her after she did not attend church service.

In addition, it was mentioned by some locals that the deceased lecturer’s husband, who was also a professor at the same university, had previously passed away.

The lecturer who recently passed away was said to have fired a female home helper who was living with her, and the helper was tragically found dead shortly after.

However, the police have stated that their investigation has revealed that the lecturer was actually attacked by the 14-year-old helper, along with her classmates named Walex and Smart. The two accomplices are currently evading capture.

According to Wasiu Abiodu, the spokesperson for the state police command, the deceased had visible injuries on her body. The helper, Afekafe, was apprehended on October 30, 2023, in the Gbeganu area of Minna. The police discovered two bloodstained knives at the crime scene, which they suspect were used by unknown individuals to stab the deceased.

The body was transported to IBB Hospital in Minna, where her death was confirmed. During questioning, Afekafe admitted that she had worked as the deceased’s maid for approximately three weeks, but was dismissed due to her actions.

“After being laid off, she encountered her classmates named Walex and Smart, and shared her unfortunate experience with them. They then collaborated on a plan to attack their lecturer at her residence.

According to Afekafe, on October 28, 2023, around 1600hrs, they arrived at the lecturer’s residence on a motorcycle. Afekafe positioned herself at the gate, while the lecturer opened it for her.

Subsequently, Walex and Smart entered the premises, assaulting the lecturer by striking her head with a stool and repeatedly stabbing her with knives. Walex had brought one knife, while Smart acquired another from the kitchen.

During the attack, they seized the deceased’s phone and laptop, and also removed the vehicle’s battery before escaping from the scene.

The suspect will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution. Authorities are actively pursuing the remaining suspects who have fled.”
