Robert Downey Jr Early Life

Robert Downey Jr is probably most recognized as Iron Man, a fictional character he has portrayed in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

He was born to an actor and filmmaker father, Robert Downey Sr., and an actress mother, Elsie Ann in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. Robert and his other sibling, a sister Allyson Downey grew up in Greenwich Village.

As a child, Robert Downey Jr. was “surrounded by drugs.” His father was a drug addict and equally allowed him to use marijuana at age six. Eventually, he began to spend every night abusing drugs and alcohol.

During his childhood, the talented star had minor roles in the films of his father. He made his acting debut at the age of five in 1970, playing a sick puppy in the comedy film Pound, and then had a role in the 1972 film Greaser’s Palace when he was seven.

He was 13 years when his parents divorced and four years later, he dropped out of High School in 1982. Robert Downey Jr moved to New York to pursue an acting career afterward.

Robert Downey Jr is an actor, singer, and film producer. His acting career kicked off properly in 1983 when he moved to New York after dropping out of school a year earlier to pursue a career in acting.

In 1985, he was part of a young cast hired for Saturday Night Live, but criticism and poor ratings that followed made sure he and some other crew members were dropped and replaced. In 1985 he played a sidekick in Tuff Turf and then a bully in Weird Science. He had his first lead role in The 1987 film  The Pick-up Artist

In 1987, he starred as Julian Wells in the film version of Less Than Zero, a film which drove him into bigger budget films such as Chances Are,  Air America, and Soapdish. In 1992, he played Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin. 

The following year he appeared in films like Heart and Souls and Short Cuts along with a documentary titled The Last Party. Between 1994 to 1999 he starred in Only You, Natural Born Killers, RestorationRichard IIITwo Girls and a Guy, U.S. Marshals, and Black and White.

His career troubles came between 1996 to 2001 when he was arrested severally on charges related to drug use including marijuana, cocaine and heroin, and marijuana, and unsuccessfully went through drug treatment programs.
In 1996 he was arrested for possession of cocaine, heroin, and an unloaded handgun while speeding down Sunset Boulevard. While on parole, he trespassed into the home of a neighbor while under a controlled substance influence and fell asleep on one of the beds.
In 1997, he missed a court-ordered drug test and was made to spend six months in jail, and was arrested once more in 1999 when he missed another required drug test in 1999. He was sentenced to a prison term of three years in Corcoran, California. After almost one year in prison, he was unexpectedly freed on the condition of posting a bail of $5,000.

In April 2001, while on parole, he was spotted wandering barefooted in Culver City by a police officer and was arrested on suspicion of being under drug influence, but was freed a few hours after despite having traces of cocaine in his system as revealed by tests.

Two months later he pleaded no contest to charges, avoiding jail time. He was sent into drug rehab instead and received probation for three years.

After half a decade of substance abuse, arrests, rehab, and relapse, Robert Downey Jr was set to work toward complete recovery from substance addiction and return to his career. He made a return to the big screen when his close friend Mel Gibson paid his insurance bond in The Singing Detective. 

This paved the way for his comeback and he returned to mainstream films with Gothika, for which the film’s producer withheld 40% of his salary until the wrap-up of production as insurance against his behavior as an addict. His contracts since have had similar clauses attached.

After featuring in Gothika, he was cast in a number of films including Good Night and Good Luck, Rotoscoped A Scanner Darkly, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fur, The Shaggy Dog, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and a host of others. 

On November 23, 2004, Robert Downey Jr released his first-ever musical album, The Futurist which received mixed reviews.

He returned to television in 2006 when he voiced acting on Family Guy. The following year he appeared in the mystery thriller film, Zodiac, and real success came for the man in 2008 when he starred in Tropic thunder and Iron Man, two critically successful films.

Iron Man was released globally released April 30 and May 3, 2008. The film grossed over $585 million worldwide and received rave reviews. By October of the same year, Robert Downey Jr had agreed to appear again as Iron Man in two sequels of Iron Man as part of the Iron Man franchise, as well as appearing in The Avengers.
