Former world number one Simona Halep has been cleared to return to professional tennis after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dramatically reduced her four-year doping ban to a mere nine months. The 32-year-old Romanian star, who has vehemently maintained her innocence throughout the ordeal, can now resume her career immediately.

Halep’s suspension stemmed from a positive test for Roxadustat, a substance used to treat anemia but banned for its potential blood-doping effects, at the 2022 US Open. She also faced accusations of “irregularities” in her biological passport data.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Halep expressed relief and determination: “This long and difficult process has only strengthened my belief in the truth. I cannot wait to return to the tour.”

Halep’s successful appeal to CAS hinged on the argument that the positive test resulted from a contaminated supplement, and that anomalies in her biological passport could be linked to a recent surgery. CAS ultimately agreed, stating, “Ms. Halep… established… that the Roxadustat entered her body through a contaminated supplement.”

The court further acknowledged that while Halep did not intentionally dope, she did bear “some level of fault or negligence” for not exercising sufficient caution with the supplement. However, CAS deemed the negligence “not significant” and ultimately reduced the ban to the nine months she had already served, starting from her provisional suspension in October 2022.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which initially imposed the four-year ban, acknowledged the CAS decision. “We respect both [Halep’s] right to appeal and the outcome,” stated ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse.

Halep’s return is a welcome development for the tennis world. The two-time Grand Slam champion remains a fan favorite, and her absence from the court has been a significant loss to the sport. With the cloud of doping accusations lifted, Halep can now focus on her on-court performance and potentially reclaim her place at the top of the women’s game.
