A member of the infamous cult gang responsible for the capture and killing of the Divisional Police Officer in Ahoada, Bako Angbashim, has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, the arrest was made after receiving credible information that the suspect was at the risk of being lynched by a mob in Edoaha community.

Upon arrival at the scene, the police rescued the suspect, who had a tyre around his neck ready to be set on fire by the assailants. The suspect was then taken to a police station before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence unit.

The arrested individual is providing valuable information that will assist in apprehending the other fleeing members of the gang, particularly their leader, David Okpara.

According to the statement, on Monday, 25/09/2023 at approximately 19:43hrs, the Rivers State Police came to know about a situation in Edoaha community, Ahoada East. They received credible information that one of the individuals responsible for the brutal murder of SP Bako Angbashim was at risk of being lynched by an enraged mob.

Upon receiving this information, a group of police officers swiftly responded to save the suspect from being burned with a tire around his neck. The suspect was successfully rescued and taken to the police station, where he provided valuable information in his statement.

Later on, he was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet investigation aimed at apprehending the leader of the gang, his accomplices, and recovering the weapons they used for their operations.

In the meantime, a video capturing the arrest of an unidentified gang member has gone viral, surfacing on Tuesday.

In the video, the suspect is seen sitting on the ground with a tire around his waist while being interrogated by armed policemen. During the interrogation, he confesses that Angbashim was killed by his group, led by Gift Okpara, but denies having any knowledge about the whereabouts of the late DPO.

In the video, when asked by the police, the suspect replies, “I won’t lie to you, sir. I wasn’t present when they killed the DPO.”

It should be recalled that the police had previously announced the arrest of several gang members. Also, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminilayi Fubara, had placed a N100m bounty on the cult leader following the murder of the DPO by the gang.
