Students of Benson Idahosa University Protest As Colleague Dies Playing Football

Students of Benson Idahosa University Benin, Edo state, staged a massive protest on Tuesday over the death of a fellow student as a result of negligence.

According to a source, the student was not immediately attended to by the medical personnel at the health facility on campus when he was rushed for treatment.

The student identified as Bruno Chigozie Ezeonye, a final year student of Computer Science at the University, slumped and eventually died while playing football at the school’s Legacy campus football pitch.

The student was quickly rushed to the medical facility when he slumped but wasn’t quickly attended to by the medical personnel on ground, leading to his death, sources say.

“When they eventually responded and needed to refer him to Faith Mediplex Hospital, an affiliate of the Institution, located at Airport Road, the ambulance driver complained of lack of petrol in the ambulance,” the source said.

The protesting students vandalized the school’s clinic and security post in anger over the death of their colleague before being calmed down by the president of the university, Bishop FEB Idahosa.

Temi Esonamunjor, the Institution’s Head of Communication and Brand Strategy simply responded when contacted, “The university will make an official press statement on the true state of things.”
