Taye Diggs grew up in the South Wedge neighborhood of Rochester, New York. His father was Andre Young a visual artist, while his mother was Marcia, an actress, and teacher.

Taye Diggs’s mother married Jeffries Diggs when he was a child so the name “Taye” came from Jeffries Diggs’s surname. His nickname, “Taye” reportedly emerged from the playful pronunciation of Scotty as “Scotty”.
