The Nigerian music Industry is clearly a force to be reckoned with in the local and internationally scene. Our artists are simply exceptional with their exploits; and clearly reaping from the hard work they have put into their chosen field. The role of record labels can never be overemphasized; they are the managers who ensure that the creative work of the music artists are put in the right paces; to reach its maximum potential.

Record labels are also in charge of scouting talents, mentoring them, building the right image, taking care of their personal needs and making them  grow into mega superstars. Despite the numerous entertainment companies that exist in the country; we can’t help but to notice that some of them have been able to stand out from the rest . This basically measures through the big names and relevance through songs ,shows , trends, brand endorsement among other criteria.

The story of the Nigerian music industry cannot be complete without the name Mo’Hits Records and then leader; Don Jazzy. He and D’banj who co-owned Mo’Hits Records parted ways in 2012. Don Jazzy thereafter set up Mavin Records which is arguably the record label with the highest number of top performing acts; and some of the biggest hits as a crew ; Dorobucci, Jantamanta and Adaobi to name few. In addition, they have an array of stars who are clearly at the top of their game; and have the backings of some of the best producers in the game presently . Mavins is known to scout new and emerging talents and turning them into household names. Currently being led by Don Jazzy, Mavin houses Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Di’Ja, Korede Bello, Poe, Dna and Johnny Drille.


Founded by Audu Maokori in 2005 to promote Nigerian hip hop culture and lifestyle; it is safe to say that Choc city has been able to make a name for themselves in the Nigerian music industry. The record label once had the line-up of M.I, Jesse jagz, Ice Prince and Brymo as its front liners. These certainly were some of the most sought after hip hop clique in Africa at one point. However, in recent times they have evolved and are currently home to young budding stars like Dice Ailes, Koker, Ruby Gyan and the ever energetic Dj Lambo who was their first female artist. Chocolate City produced the first African Rapper to win a BET awards (Ice Prince, 2011) , Highest selling Rap Album on Itunes ( Chairman by M.I) amongst other accolades they have gotten.


The home of Africa’s biggest pop star, Davido. He set up this record label in 2016 signing pioneer members Mayorkun , Dremo and Ichaba. DMW have been able to stand out among other outfits because of the numerous hits they have put out since its existence; IF, FALL, FIA ,Cheche, Like Dat , Mama , Ojere , Mind , Aje are amongst the biggest songs in the country . DMW also has the services of Fresh, Peruzzi , Soft and Yonda. With shows, songs and awards they seem ready to take over the game in short period of time


YBNL is the record label named after the second album of Nigerian artist Olamide. Olamide’s record label has been able to produce top notch music which have topped charts across the country . YBNL has achieved several milestones and it is the maiden home of stars like Lil Kesh , Adekunle Gold , Viktor , Chinko Ekun , Pheelz, DJ Enimoney . In recent years they have been able to remain relevant in the game; with new acts like Temmie Ovwasa , Limerick , Demmie Vee and Lyta as its new kids on the block. YBNL is set to achieve more success in the industry especially with Olamide in charge.


Owned by Steve Babaeko , X3M Is one of the major record labels without a commercial artist that seem to be achieving whole lot . it is the home of Simi , Praize, Sammy. X3M music have been able to carve a niche for themselves in the music industry, with set standards they are looking to expand their horizons in the game . Simisola by Simi is a Billboard Charting album in the World Category, Praize won the Best Male Vocal Performance in the just concluded Headies Award.
