Ty Pennington (Gary Tygert Burton) was born to a school psychologist named Yvonne Burton. She raised him and his younger brother Wynn alone because she had separated from their father when the boys were younger.

She married her second husband who adopted Ty Pennington and his brother, and they began to bear the Pennington family name. From the very early age of 12, he showed interest in working as a carpenter.

He and some of his neighbor friends built an astonishing three-story wooden building which was simply fascinating to his neighbors. As a child, Ty Pennington exhibited behavioral problems which led to his being diagnosed with ADHD when he was 17.


Ty Pennington and his younger brother Wynn grew up in their hometown of  Marietta where Ty Pennington attended Sprayberry High School. He moved on to study at Kennesaw State University before completing his studies at Atlanta College of Art where he earned a diploma in commercial art.

He is also an Honorary doctorate degree holder, which he was awarded by Savannah College of Art and Design.
