Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is presently the President of the Republic of Kenya, a businessman, and a politician. He was at one time a Member of the Parliament (MP) for Gatundu South ( 2002 – 2013). Uhuru Kenyatta is the current party leader and member of the Jubilee Party of Kenya. He has been involved with the Kenyan African National Union and the National Alliance parties before now. Uhuru Kenyatta is the son of the first Kenyan president’ Jome Kenyatta and his fourth wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta. Uhuru is currently on his second tenure as president and was reelected in the August 2017 general elections where he won the popular vote by 54%. His win was announced by Wafula Chebukati, the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. However, it was also challenged at the Supreme Court of Kenya by his principal contender, Rala Odinga where the election was declared invalid, and a new presidential election scheduled. However, he still won the second election, this time characterised by voter fatigue and apathy with 39%.

Uhuru Kenyatta was born on the 26th of October in the year 1961, his name “Uhuru” symbolizes freedom and was given in anticipation of Kenya’s freedom. He attended St Mary’s School before briefly working as a teller at the Kenya Commercial bank. After this, he studied economics, political science, and government at the Amherst College in the United States.

After he graduated, he returned and created a company called the Wilham Kenya Limited which as widely known for exporting agricultural produce to other countries. He was nominated for Parliament in 2001, and before long he became the Minister for Local Government Under the President Daniel Arap Moi. However, he had little political exposure at the time.

In 2002, Uhuru Kenyatta ran for the 2002 presidential election but lost to a contender, Mwai Kibaki by an enormous margin.  However, he switched sides and became a leader for the ruling party, supporting Mwai Kibaki when he ran for the second tenure.  After Kibaki got re-elected, he became the Minister of Local Government in 2008, before moving upwards to deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade in 2008.

By 2009, he became the Minister of Finance while still holding the post of the Deputy Prime Minister. He was accused by the criminal court of several violent crimes concerning the 2007 elections.

However, his position was intact until 2012 when he resigned and ran for president. He was elected President of Kenya in 2013.

Uhuru’s entry into politics began in 1997 when he contested and lost the Gatundu South Constituency sit to Moses Mwhilia who is an architect based in Nairobi. Later on, he was appointed to the Kenya Tourism Board, by President Moi and in 2001, he was nominated to parliament. He also got elected to become one of the four national vice-chairmen of KANU in that same year.

Uhuru Kenyatta biography would not be complete without the many controversies hovering over his presidential administration. First, he was accused of certain discrepancies found in the 2009 budget, where the parliament thought they were voting on 22 billion Kshs as against the Ksh 31 billion written on the budget. He was however cleared with the defense, that they had to be a computer or typographical errors.

Before he came to a president, he had been suspected of crimes against humanity by the Internal Criminal Court Prosecutor, Luis Moreno Ocampo. This was in relations to the violence witnessed during the 2007 December elections. However, his name was cleared of all accusations.

During his elections into the Presidential seat, he was accused of foul play and the results of the election contested by his opposition. However, he won the election the second time.

Uhuru Kenyatta Presidency And Challenges

Uhuru was sworn into office for his second tenure on the 28th of November, 2017. And while giving his inaugural speech, he declared free maternal care for all Kenyans.  However, there have been many challenges witnessed by his administration. The first is the 2017 general elections and the violence attached to it. Secondly the increasing public wage bill and rising public debt. His government has also been accused of corruption.

His foreign relations are dominated by the allegations of violent crimes posed by the ICC. The United Kingdom even promised only to establish necessary contacts but not deepen the relationship any further. However, since his election, his relations have improved considerably as he was even able to attend the U.S-Africa Summit. He has also pushed for the intra-Africa trade and the independence of African nations. Uhuru Kenyatta has also led negotiation agreements in South Sudan and Congo.  He is friends with the Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni and Rwanda President Paul Kagame.

Uhuru Kenyatta also attended the funeral of Nelson Mandela and President Michael Sata of Zambia in 2014.  He is close relations with China from where he gets the majority of the funds used in financing his infrastructural projects.

In 2015, he was named the most traveled Kenyan President, having at the time being out of the country 43 times in three years of assuming office.  His approval ratings given by Kenyans were meager within his first year in his first tenure as president. However, this increased by the following year.

Nevertheless, in subsequent years, after the 2017 elections and assumption into power for his second tenure, these rates are going down rapidly probably due to the high taxes placed on fuel and other commodities making them highly un-affordable for Kenyans.

Uhuru Kenyatta is married to Margaret Gakuo Kenyatta who is the first lady of Kenya due to her marriage to the president. She assumed office after the induction of her husband. Margaret is widely known for her campaigns against Child Mortality rates and identifies her self as a Catholic. She was born on April 8, 1964, and was married to Uhuru Kenyatta in the year 1991.

Their children are  Jaba Kenyatta, Jomo Kenyatta, and Nigina Kenyatta.
