President Bola Tinubu has given his authorization for over 260 road repairs to be carried out in the 36 states of the federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made this known to journalists at the State House on Thursday after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Umahi stated that the total cost of emergency repairs on the 260 roads across the country would amount to about N217 billion.

He further revealed that the President had approved additional road construction works, including upgrades to existing projects.

Umahi also disclosed that the President had given his consent for the resurfacing of the 3rd Mainland Bridge, construction of the Lekki Deep Seaport Road, reconstruction of two collapsed bridges in Enugu, and the reconstruction of two sections on the Onitsha-Owerri Road.

The ongoing Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia Road is among the other roads that have been given approval for construction.

Additionally, the Lafia by-pass will also be dualised. I have always praised the President for his keen interest in restoring our roads in the country.

We receive numerous concerns from the public about the terrible condition of our roads, but every paper I have presented to the President regarding this matter has been approved. Just yesterday, he granted approval for over 260 road interventions in all the states and the FCT.

Last week, he also approved several emergency repairs for roads and bridges. Immediate reconstruction plans were put into motion for three bridges that collapsed in the South-West region. Similarly, repairs for the Shendam-Lafia road were also approved.

“Our team has identified approximately 17 points along the East-West Road that have been severely damaged by floods. I am pleased to inform you that the President has swiftly approved the necessary funds for immediate repairs. Additionally, the President has granted approval for the resurfacing and repair of the Third Mainland Bridge, as well as addressing noticeable defects underneath the deck using appropriate equipment.

Furthermore, the President has approved the reconstruction of two bridges in Enugu, as well as two locations along the Onitsha-Owerri Road. Additionally, the Lokoja-Abuja Road has been granted approval for reconstruction.

In total, we have identified 260 emergency repairs across the country, which amounts to approximately N217 billion. I am immensely pleased with the support from the President in this regard.

Moreover, this afternoon, the President has also approved the upgrading of the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia Road. This project is currently underway as a public-private partnership with our Chinese counterparts, with the Nigerian government contributing 15% of the costs.

Furthermore, we have initiated plans for the construction of the Lafia Bypass, which includes the dualisation of the route from Makurdi, through Oturkpo, Oboloafor, down to 9th Mile. This is a major development that will greatly enhance transportation in the region.
