Two armed robbery suspects arrested in Lagos by members of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have admitted to selling stolen ATM cards to fraudsters who use a code to empty the owners’ bank accounts.
Korede Saheed, 29, and Yahaya Faisal, 22, were arrested in separate incidents in Lagos State between Magodo Estate and Otedola bridge. Yahaya Faisal was arrested by RRS police on Friday, May 27, whilst Korede was arrested on Thursday, May 26.
Korede stated in his confessional statement to the police that he sold stolen Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards to fraudsters at give away prices.
“We are only interested in the content of the bag or purse stolen, but we give ATM cards and credit cards found in any stolen bags to our 419 friends, at times for about N10,000. But most often they give us something if they succeed in using the ATM card to syphon money from a bank account.
What the 419 do is simply dial a number and the USSD code of the owner of the account will pop up” he said
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed their arrest to the media and said that the suspects’ luck ran out when their victims contacted RRS police on patrol in the area.
The officers arrested the defendants and retrieved a Samsung Galaxy S8 and an iPhone 12 from them, according to Hundeyin.
According to him, Yahaya, who was discovered with several ATM cards, admitted that his crew robbed in traffic between the Ojodu-Berger and Otedola Bridges.
