Whoopi Goldberg’s birth name is Caryn Elaine Johnson. She was born on the 13th of November, 1955 to Robert James, a clergyman, and Emma Harris, a teacher, and nurse. Whoopi was born in New York, Manhattan, and was raised in Chelsea-Elliot Houses.

Goldberg and her brother were raised by her mother whom she described as a “stern, strong, and wise woman”. At a younger age, she went to St Columba’s Catholic school and later Washington Irving High school.

She explained that her stage name “Whoopi” came from the whoopee cushion. She further explained “When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door.
