An explanation was made by the Lagos state police headquarters in Ikeja on Monday why Seun Kuti was arrested despite turning himself in.

Seun Kuti, the late Fela Kuti’s son, was arrested at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, or SCIID, in Yaba, Lagos for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Lagos on Saturday.

This incidence went viral on Twitter, making people question the police act of handcuffing Seun Kuti.

However, it was quickly explained by Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos state police relations officer. In his words, he said “Because the laws empower us to handcuff any suspect who has shown a propensity for violence and propensity for evading justice.”

The Lagos state commissioner of police was given a direct order by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba on Saturday night to arrest Seun Kuti after seeing a video of the singer slapping a policeman which went viral on social media on Saturday.

Police service commission demands musician’s prosecution

Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat singer, is being immediately prosecuted, according to the Police Service Commission, for allegedly assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos State on Saturday.

No one has the right to assault a police officer while they are in uniform and performing their official duties, regardless of the crime the officer has done, according to PSC Chairman Dr. Solomon Arase, a retired Inspector-General of Police. Seun’s arrest would serve as a deterrence to other people, he said.

Seun Kuti will risk three years imprisonment.

It was made known that if Seun Kuti is found guilty of assault against the yet-to-be-named police officer, he is liable to spend three years in prison, according to section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

The Act reads,“ Anyone who assaults, resists, or willfully obstructs a police officer while acting in the execution of his duty, or any person acting in aid of a police officer while so acting is guilty of felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.” Kuti, who wore a red shirt and white pair of trousers, in a 12-second video clip which went viral on Saturday showed Kuti  pushing a policeman, who stood beside a Toyota Hilux police van. He then proceeded to slap the cop, as he shouted, “You dey craze, you dey mad!!
