Zinedine Zidane Early Life

Before we delve into Zinedine Zidane Teams Coached, let’s talk about bis early life.  Zizou, as he is fondly called was christened Zinedine Zidane.

He was born on the 2nd of June, 1972 to an Algerian father, Smail, who was a night watchman at a local chain store and an Algerian mother, who was practically a housewife. He was the youngest of his siblings and was raised in La Casteliane, a suburb of Marseille, France.

Zinedine Zidane got his first exposure to the round leather game at the tender age of five years old when he played with kids at the place Tartane, which is a public square in his hood.

Nevertheless, that was when his parents migrated to Paris, France from the northern region of Algeria in 1953 just before the war in their country broke out.

He never truly had a good beginning but just a humble beginning. Afterwards, he got his first player license at the age of ten and then after, he joined the junior team of US saint Henri and again proceeded to another amateur team called SO Septemes-les Vallon where he was given the opportunity to play with the team until he was 14 years old when he was selected to join a training camp- Regional Center for Sports and Physical Education which was put up by the French Federation.

Interestingly, for Zinedine Zidane, it was at this camp that he was identified for recruitment by AS Cannes where he began his football career, professionally.

His Football Career From Player to Manager

He turned up at AS Cannes for a six-week initial trial but he ended up representing the club for four years. He made his debut for AS Cannes on the 18th of May, 1989 when he played against Nantes. After scoring his first goal for his club, the president, Alain Peretti gave him a car to fulfill his promise to him.

While at AS Cannes, he was disciplined for punching an opponent who mocked his poor background, because he takes no exception to anyone who tried to ridicule his poor background.

However, in his first season at AS Cannes he helped his team to finish in fourth place in the French Division 1 which earned his club qualification to play in Europe for the first time ever in the club’s history.

Afterward, in 1992, he was sold to Girondins Bordeaux for four years and he helped the club to win the 1995 Intertoto Cup after beating Karlsruhe, and in the 1995/1996 seasons, Bordeaux finished runner-up to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup.

As a fast-rising star, European clubs of repute were showing interest in Zidane, and in 1996, the UEFA Champions League winner, Juventus came for his services after he had won the Ligue 1 player of the Year.

From there, he moved to become a Juventus player and instantly established himself as a hit man in Italy and helped his team win the 1996-97 Seria A title, including the 1996 Intercontinental Cup.

With Zinedine Zidane on board the team, Juventus was able to make three consecutive UEFA Champions League final appearances with ease.

In 1998, when France hosted the world cup and Zidane showed so much class when he helped his country, France to beat the tournament favorite, Brazil to a 3-0 victory by scoring a brace, and he was consequently named the FIFA World Player of the Year, winning also the Ballon d’Or title to his name.

Still savoring more glory, Zidane and the golden generation of French football won the European Championship in 2000 and he was named the Player of the Tournament.

Obviously, new opportunities opened up and he was signed up by Real Madrid, the Spanish giant for a world record transfer fee of 66 Million Pounds.

Upon his arrival at Real Madrid, he won the league title and the coveted UEFA Champions League title in his first year with the club.

However, in 2006, World Cup where he came out of retirement to lead the French team to a splendid outing, he was abruptly sent off for head-butting an Italian defender, Marco Materazzi and this affected his team psyche as they crumbled in the hands of the Italians.

After retiring from football as a player, he went into coaching.

Later that year, he was appointed coach of Real Madrid’s B team, Real Madrid Castilla In January the following year, when the club made a few in-season coaching changes, Zidane replaced Rafa Benitez as the manager of the first team of Real Madrid. He didn’t waste time in leaving a good impression.

Later that year, he led his team to win the FIFA World Cup. He left a record of 40 undefeated matches by beating FC Barcelona, surpassing Louis Enrique’s 39 matches.

Days after the Champions League Tournament, on the 1st of May 2018, Zidane resigned from his position as Madrid’s manager. This came as a subtle surprise to the football community. Zidane claimed his decision was based on his belief that the club needed a cultural change.

However, Zinedine Zidane didn’t spend much time on the sidelines. He managed to come back to Real Madrid in 2019 not too long after the club was eliminated from the Champions League tournament. He did wonders again, as he led Madrid to win another La Liga title.

All in all, Real Madrid has achieved so much under Zidane’s coaching, compared the previous managers like Jose Murinho and Rafael Benitez.

As a player, he had practically won almost everything available from World Cup to Euro Cup, League titles, and Champions League titles.

Zinedine Zidane, in 1994, got married to his long-time girlfriend, Veronique Fernandez whom he met as a 17 years old while he was playing for AS Cannes in France and they both have been blessed with four male children named Enzo, Luca, Theo, and Elyaz.
